What is a root canal treatment?
A root canal treatment, also known as root canal therapy or endodontic treatment, is a procedure that helps remove an infected, injured, or dead pulp from your tooth. When bacteria enter the space inside the hard layer (the root canal system) and a cracked tooth, your tooth and its pulp can be infected. An impacted tooth can cause discomfort, sensitivity, inflammation, an abscess on the gums.
Your dentist may recommend you do a root canal treatment or an endodontic treatment. An endodontist is a highly skilled professional who specializes in repairing the dental pulp or nerve of the tooth.
What happens after the root canal treatment?
After the procedure, the endodontist will put a temporary filling to fill the opening of the tooth before they can send you back to your dentist. Then, your dentist will have a final tooth restoration and put in a permanent filling or a crown for a full restoration.
Depending on the severity, 2 appointments may be needed for a root canal treatment. After the procedure, your tooth may be tender for the first couple of weeks. However, if you are feeling any sort of discomforts, such as swelling or pain, then you will need to call your dentist for a checkup.
In most cases after the procedure, you can still get gum or cavity disease. If left untreated or if not done with proper care, the tooth may need to be extracted to protect the teeth beside it.
