As we leave another year behind and enter into a new one, it’s the perfect time to set goals for a healthier smile. Besides a visit to the dentist for a checkup, there are many things you can do from the comfort of your own home.
At Brentwood Village Dental Clinic, we are committed to helping you achieve a beautiful and confident smile for life. Here are some of our favourite New Year’s resolutions that you can take into 2024 to enhance your dental health.
Commit to Regular Brushing
When it comes to proper oral hygiene, the magic number is 2. Brush twice a day for two minutes each time. Consider in investing an electric toothbrush with a timer to ensure you brush long enough. Don’t forget to brush in gentle circular motions and to use a soft-bristled brush.
Floss Daily
Even when you brush twice a day, there are still areas where your toothbrush can’t reach. Flossing can ensure that you remove the debris that is between your teeth. If you find traditional floss challenging, try using floss picks or a water flosser.
Use a Tongue Scraper
Along with brushing and flossing, using a tongue scraper will remove bacteria that becomes trapped on your tongue. While you can brush your tongue with a toothbrush, it is not the most effective method. Removing bacteria from your tongue not only reduces your risk of plaque build-up and tooth decay, but it also reduces bad breath.
Reduce Sugar Intake
Sugar is a leading cause of tooth decay. Cutting down on sugary snacks and drinks can reduce the risk to your dental health. While a lot of these foods are delicious, the good news is a small reduction can make a difference. Remember, moderation is key.
Quit Smoking
If you smoke, make this the year you quit. We know this one is difficult; however, smoking increases the risk of gum disease, tooth loss and oral cancer. This one may be the hardest resolution to keep, but it is also very beneficial.
You don’t have to do this one alone; there are many resources available to help you quit, including calling the AlbertaQuits helpline at 1-866-710-QUIT (7848).
Regular Dental Check-Ups
Lastly, schedule regular dental checkups. Again, the magic number here is two. Aim to do two checkups per year to remove tartar and plaque that can cause cavities and tooth decay. This is key to preventing dental issues.
Adopting these simple yet effective dental care routines can make a significant difference in your oral health. Your smile is an integral part of your overall well-being.
